Evaluation

  • IDEAS & CONCEPTS: How have your ideas changed over the course of the project? Explain your initial ideas and original intentions explaining how they have developed over time, making sure that you LINK THIS BACK TO THE EXAM THEME AND EXPLAIN HOW YOUR IDEAS REFLECT THE THEME OF INSIDE, OUTSIDE, IN-BETWEEN?
Over the project I feel that I ideas have changed due to having different paths to follow. When I first started off this project I looked at movement and light and how that linked in with the exam theme of Inside, Outside and Inbetween. I also looked into the five senses, this has a little bit to do with my final idea. Through looking at different starting points and looking at different photographers work I feel that I have developed over time with my potential ideas and my fink idea.

  • PHOTOGRAPHER INSPIRATION: Discuss how your ideas have been influenced by key photographers or artists you have looked at. Did the exhibition trip inspire your ideas at all? Did you find any photographers that took your work on a totally different path? WHICH PHOTOGRAPHER INSPIRED YOUR FINAL PIECE THE MOST?
I looked at many photographers and artist during this project, one being Andrew Warrender. He worked a lot with OCD photography which really did inspire me for an experiment and for my final outcome. I like his work because it is very vibrant and has a lot of character. Another Photographer that I loved the work of was on the trip; Jurgen Teller's Woo! exhibition. One piece of work that I really loved was his photograph of Kurt Cobain. I love how simple and natural the musician looks. Even though Cobain's face isn't showing, you can still see a lot of emotion in the way he is sitting. The photographers inspiration that I liked the look of and there for became my final inspiration was Clunie Reid's work. She using collage techniques, with different size image and text to compensate with each other.

  • EXPERIMENTATION & DEVELOPMENT: How did the different experiments that you did throughout the project influence your ideas and final piece?
I have experimented a lot within this project with digital and darkroom. For digital experimenters I took some OCD photographs of different situations that people do for example locking the door, washing hands, hoarding things. I like this in-depth image of why people do these types of things. It because they want to be safe. Some darkroom experiments that I accomplished was selective developing, having one part of the image in focus and the background not, making handmade negatives with salt and washing up liquid. Also I used a lot of cutting experiments once I had the prints developed to create different types of collages. Some of these experiments have influenced my chosen techniques that I will use in my final outcome, because I feel that they will work well with my theme with Inside, Outside and Inbetween.

  • CONCLUSION: Comment on your overall thoughts about the project. Did you find the exam theme easy / difficult? Did you enjoy working on your prep work? Do you think you will be pleased with your final outcome when it is complete?
I found this exam theme quite hard to begin with because I didn't really understand how I could incorporate the theme into photographs, but after looking at different starting point I began to feel more confident with the theme. I did enjoy some of the prep work, more so the experiments because it gave me different ways on how to work with techniques. I think I will be please with my final outcome because I have put  a lot of effort into my final ideas and hopefully the grade I will achieve will be benefited with the work that I have put into the exam theme of INSIDE, OUTSIDE & INBETWEEN!!!

Inspiration for Final Outcome

My final idea for the exam theme of Inside, Outside and Inbetween, is going to be the development of depression and the symptoms of OCD. The reason why I have chosen to pursue this subject is because of the inner turmoil that goes on in someones mind that you may no specifically see when you meet them. I feel this topic of depression and OCD will show a side to what people do with a particular disorder, for example counting or repeating words silently. Two main influences for the this was the film 'One Hour Photo' and 'The Beautiful Mind'.

One Hour Photo is about an employee of a one-hour photo lab becomes obsessed with a young suburban family. As you can see the arrangement that he has made by his obsession with the family is plastered over a wall. The neatness of the photos are in straight rows and columns that suggests that the character has a obsessive compulsive disorder. Also if you look carefully at the images you can see they are almost in a colour-chronological order, seeing groups of the same colours in the photographs in a certain section.

The Beautiful Mind After a brilliant but asocial mathematician accepts secret work in cryptography, his life takes a turn to the nightmarish. This image above shows a wall covered in notes, photos of his cryptography work. I like the way that it has been presented because it shows not just a range of photograph, also text that connect with the pictures.

I feel that both One Hour Photo and The Beautiful Mind are good story examples of people that have either OCD or become unstable or obsessed with certain people or things. I think that these two films have really inspired me in a way that I can present my work. I like they way that a whole wall has been covered with lots of photos in a symmetrical way or with text and notes. My presentation that I will create with my photos will be with incorporating text, different techniques such as double exposure, selective development, handmade negatives, and also maybe stitching into the photos with certain words that may represent with that particular photo.

There is not a particular photographer that has really inspired me as such, but Cluine Reid is one artist that has used text and handwritten words in her images to basically describing what is in her photographs.  Also as I have been researching more into OCD that can affect people, and that has really inspired me to go outside the boxes of OCD and focus a little more on depression. Depression can be caused by so many things and I feel that the photographs that I have taken using the SLR camera will really compensate with the presentation outcome and also the theme of the exam. The images that I have taken is like a cycle of how people can be effected by depression how what people are think can really effect their actions or even how they treat people.

OCD Digital Photographs

After taking black and white images of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder symptoms, I decided to take some digital photographs of some of the symptoms

  • Washers are afraid of contamination. They usually have cleaning or hand-washing compulsions.
Here are some examples of someone washing their hands repeatedly to ensure that their hands are clean. The camera that I used was a digital SLR where I focus into the hand really close so that main focal point was really in focus and really shone out from the rest of the image. You can also see a lot of definition that is shown through the bubbles of the washing up liquid/ soap, also the definition of the hands is very precise and very much the centre of attention. This draws you into the selection of images.

  • Counters and arrangers are obsessed with order and symmetry. They may have superstitions about certain numbers, colours, or arrangements.
Here is an selection of images that are of nail polishes, in similar colours and hight order. I like this arrangement because it clearly depicts the selections of colours from quite natural colours to the bold colours. i like the lighting that has been used as it you can clearly see what is happening the background of colours and how neatly the bottles have been arranged.  As more bottles are added you can see the back bottles become more out of focus and the bottles in front become the main focal point.

  • Checkers repeatedly check things (oven turned off, door locked, etc.) that they associate with harm or danger.

Here are two images of someone turning on and off a light switch. People do this to ensure that they are secure that the light is definitely off. I have captured these images by zooming fully into the hand on the light switch, fully in focus. I turned the flash on for this so that you would get more of a contrast between all of the wall and the hand.

Clunie Reid

Clunie Reid is a photographer and artist that works with collage techniques to create abstract pieces of work such as these three pieces of work below. By adding text to the photos bring a sense of personal issues to image and some how makes it stand out more. In the first image you can see a picture of actress Nicole Kidman in black and white, with a phrase written over it, making it seem that the model has actually wrote the words herself. Also the words looks childlike and hand written so it becomes more abstract. To the right of that image is the same picture and words written over it, but have had black-marker pen covered up most of the photo, making the image more dark and mysterious. The next picture is a similar style to the first photo, with text covering the whole background image of the model. However this text is quite bold and noticeable and looks stencil like, rather than handwritten. I quite like the similarities of colours and effect between the fore and background; because the background is quite dominate in the way that the model is looking hurt and depressed, whereas the foreground with the words 'Gon An Dunna Runna' is very much bold and the centre of attention in this piece. I like the way that the words can relate to the crying girl and it all links together. The final image by Reid that I quite like is this photograph of a girl that is piratically laying on the floor in an empty room. The text that have been added to the image are handwritten indications to what you can actually see in the photograph. I like the concept of this layout design because it gets straight to the point and you dont need to be worrying about what the actual photograph is about.

All in all I like the concept of all this design involving pieces of text that can make the photograph more dynamic and sometimes personal. I feel that I can possibly use Cluine Reid as inspiration for the techniques of wriging on top of my photos, connecting to the OCD and depression theme.

Monday 22 April 2013

One photographers work that I came across while looking for more research into the world of obsessive compulsive disorder was Andrew Warrender. He has described his collection of work as a 'Self initiated project visualising and communicating Obsessive Compulsive Disorders through repetitive rituals. Quotations and rhythmic images convey the confusion and emotional pain of the sufferers.' He has captured many things that people do that have OCD, for example washing hand repeatedly for a certain amount of time and arranging coins. Below is a selection of photos digitally enhanced with some colours added to the images to bring a more vibrant feel that really compensates well with each individual. Starting from left you can see a group of images of someone washing their hands repeatedly in different positions so you get the sense of the person washing their hands constantly. The next strip of images is of someone changing the time on an alarm clock multiple times, so they know they have definitely set the time correctly. The third set of pictures is of someone locking the door. People do this to many times over and over again because they believe that fell more secure and at peace with themselves if they lock the door more than once. As you can see the next selection of images is of coins being arranged in size order or even date order of when the count was made. Finally you can see a light switch being turned on and off.

With all of this photographs are so precise in what they are in focused in. Also the colour that have been added to all of the selection of photos works really well and seems to make the images stand out more from the page. I like the concept of this particular idea because it is so different to what I have seen before. Andrew Warrender has really created something that has caught my eye in capturing the signs and symptoms of OCD and depression, which is really inspiring to see.

Exam Review

The starting points that I started with were Movement and Light and The 5 Senses, for the exam theme of INDISE, OUTSIDE & INBETWEEN. I chose movement and light first of all because you can experience this particular theme in everything you do. To start of with is first point I took some digital photographs of different lighting areas, e.g. lamps. I also took some images of shadows linking both movement and light together in one image. After that topic, I chose the 5 senses because I believe you can create alot of  work with this. I firstly took a picture of all of my 5 senses and created a collage in the style of Linder Sterling. After taking digital images and researching into the two chosen topic, I took a black and white film of three different styles that related to the two starting points: OCD, Reflection and Food.

For the two starting points and the experiments and film that I took, my ideas have slightly changed. Even though I did like the two starting points of Movement & Light and The Five Senses, I feel that if I want to push myself to get the higher marks I've to think alittle more creatively.

I have created alot of experiments digitally and in the darkroom.  Here is the digital that I feel that has shown my best skills.

This particular photos is from the Movement and Light theme because it express that some people can only see certain colours meaning they have colour blindness. I thought I would make the original photo black and white, then turn the roses back to red again. This means that the person looking at image is colour blind to green.
The black and white technique that I feel is the best is this double exposure image. I feel that the pictures that I used, two ducks on a lake and a scene in a park work really well together. I think this because of the busyness of the park in contrast to clear picture of the ducks. I really like this technique because it shows my ability to make more contrasting images and maybe more complicated.

I feel that I have been more successful in making darkroom techniques and experiments, because It is like trial and error and I like to think that in the darkroom you can take a bit of a risk and sometimes it works out for the best. So I think that most of my darkroom work is better in compression with my digital work. I would like to think that I can create more work in the darkroom better than I have ever done to hopefully get the best possible marks and more technical experiments.

I defiantly think I would like to develop my selective masking photos, because I feel they are the most successful darkroom prints that I have created for the exam project. Also I believe they will work well with my final film idea. Also I like my test strips that I have done for every print just to test out the right timing and light. Even though they are just ripped pieces of photo paper with only a section of the negative on they really abstract and quirky that could work with something in my final piece.

I think that one artist/photographer that has really inspired me for most of this project or INSIDE, OUTSIDE and INBETWEEN has been Linder Sterling's work, from her quirky collages to her ripped photos. Here to the right is an example of her ripped pieces of work and the a person interpretation of her work. Even though some of the techniques that I have created haven't really related to her work as much, I feel that her collage work is really inspiring. Also the ripped technique is something that I would really like to try and recreate and development from her work.

My exam plan for the next two week before my exam is to have a final idea in mind that will hopefully get me the best possible marks I can. I also want to do some more digital photographs so that I can have a range of black and white and digital pictures. I want to also get my sketchbook filled with lots of different ideas of possible ways I could present my final outcome, something completely unusual that nobody has done before.

Collage Techniques

Here are three collage techniques that I created for more experimentation work. Two have been film using the app iMotion on the iPad, to show the process of how I made it.

The first technique is called Torn Collage, which basically is ripping up photographs and dropping them from a height and sticking them in the position that they landed in. After they had been glued, I used three different coloured paints and swirled them over the pictures. I also added tissue paper to the collage to give it more texture. I like this experiment because you can literally add anything and everything to the collage, and it can be very imaginative. If I could improve on anything it would be just to even have the photographs spread out so they didn't look so bunched up together.

For the second experiment I cut up a photograph of someone in different shapes and sizes and rearranged the image so that you could not be able to tell what the original image was. This is called Cubomainia. I filmed the process also on iMotion so you can see how I created the final collage. If I could improve on anything it would be to use all of the pieces of picture that I cut up or even try having to different images I could cut up and rearrange them together.

For the final collage technique, as a group we had to create a Exquisite Corpse, which is basically, using different images of people of objects to create a person. One person would design the head fold the paper over, past it on to someone who would then make the body and then they would give it to the final person who would created the legs. You would eventually get a unique image from different images or drawings that have created the collage. With my exquisite corpse I would add more things onto it to make it more attractive in they way that people will take notice.

Selective Development Masking

A technique that I really enjoyed was Selective Development Making, this meant trying to create a mask out of black paper, exposing part of the image in focus. then covering up the exposed area with a smaller piece of card, un-focus the rest of the image then develop this as normal. I experimented with seven photos that I thought would work quite well with this experiment. With all of these images I like that there is a scene going on behind the main subject matter of the person or animal. I like the way that you are drawn into the focus part of the image, then are drawn into the unfocused background. i believe that I works really well together. I also like how the paper that has exposed and then hidden the focused image has created a sort of border around the masked image, making the picture seem more abstracted and more technical. Even though all of the background on each of the seven photographs are completely out of focus, you can still see a lot of definition coming through where the original picture was in focus when I captured the image with my camera.  I really do like this effect because it is very unique and is something that I may try this technique again as development into making my final outcome, linking to the theme of 'Inside, Outside and Inbewteen'.

Darkroom Experiments

For all of these experiments, I have used photographs that I took during the photography trip, around Green Park and Trafalgar Square.

Double Exposure
Here are my double exposure prints that I created in the darkroom. The top one is of a Green Park, with the lake and people walking past it and admiring the scenery. As you begin to look closer I have made a double exposure with a pair of ducks that I placed on top of the park image. I felt this picture would work the most because there is some connection within both of this pictures, by having the ducks almost floating above what they would normally be swimming on top of. I also like the contrast between both pictures, because it brings out a lot of texture.

For the second sandwich negative print, I used a shot of lots of people walking through the park, oblivious to me taking the picture. The second photo that I used was of inside of a bin that I took in the park. I wanted to make this exposure quite complicated to figure out as both images are busy. I like the contrast between both pictures because you can still see the what is going on in the two pictures. It does look a little bit busy but I think it works really well.

Handmade Negatives
The next experiment that I accomplished, was to make a handmade negative out of lots of different objects. How I created the negative was by using two pieces of acetate then I placed things onto one of the pieces of acetate sheets; I used Vaseline, salt and washing up liquid. I then placed the second sheet on top so the mixture would not ruin my negative, then I placed the handmade negative, ontop of the photo, with in the negative carrier.

For this top image is of Nelsons Column in Trafalgar Square, I took this from a difficult angle as I was trying to get most of the monument in shot. I feel that the handmade negative works really well with this particular image because of the texture the washing-up liquid and the salt has given the picture.

Another image that I thought that could work quite well with the handmade negative is this image of the tube sign. Even though the sky in the photo is quite light, you can still see the effect that the salt has given it. You can definitely see the definition of the salt grains in the image, which grabs your attention more as you look at even more closer. And automatically
makes the image more textured.

The final photograph is of a lamppost by HorseGuards Parade. I thought this image would work really well with the texture of the salt and vaseline together on the acetate, within the negative carrier. The image almost looks like it has been snowing and I have captured the shot just as it has just begun to snow.

Under-Processing

For another experiment that I created in the dark room was this example of under processing a print. This means that I developed the photo normally, then where as you would normally put the print into the stop bath once it has been developed properly. I used a brush to apply the stop mixture to the image, but only in certain areas of. As you can see the the sky looks purple this is due to the lack of stopping the photograph from developing even further. After applying the stop to the print, I then put the image in the the fix for about five seconds, a lot shorter than I normally would, then washed the print. As you can see inbetween the purple sky in the middle is slightly brownish, this is coursed by not fixing the print for a long amount of time. All in all I really like this effect because it almost gives the image a colour boost and more mysterious feel, as the sky is starting to turn different shades of colours.

Photography Trip

For our photography trip we travel to London where we visited two galleries: the Institute of Contemporary Arts to view Jurgen Teller's Woo! which was located down The Mall, and also the National Portrait Gallery to see some Man Ray Portraits. I believe the theme of Tellers exhibition is to try and shock the audience with the photos he has taken of many different celebrities it unusual situations. Rays exhibition was to show case different styles of portraits, using different techniques. Both exhibitions tell a story of how to shock people and connected different techniques within different surroundings. I found that in the the Woo! exhibition that it was very random, meaning having an photo of a kitten next to a naked image of Viviene Westwood was a little strange and confusing, but I did like his quirky style. In the Man Ray exhibition, i found that all the portraits expressed different periods of time and styles, but I felt some were a little small to look at. Out of both galleries and exhibitions I would recommend Jurgen Tellers Woo! because of how shocking some of his work was and definitely catches your attention more that Man Rays. Even though Rays work was great, I feel more attracted to Tellers quirky uniqueness, this he has portrayed in many ways.

We also took some film and digital photographers in Green Park and Trafalgar Square. Our main task was to find one photo that really interested us and write an in depth analysis about it.
Below are my two images that I really liked in each exhibition.

Jurgen Teller: Woo!

This image above is called Kurt Cobain, No5 Berlin 1991. Previous to the name the model in  the image is Kurt Cobain who was an American musician and artist, best known for being in the grunge band Nirvana. The subject matter of this image is of the artist closely holding his guitar so that you cant see his face. The picture is in black and white meaning you get a lot of contrast when you look at it. The meaning of this photo is that how much music means to Cobain. The way that he is holding the guitar which shows such dedication to his music. Even though you can't see the expression in his face, concentration is the main element which you can guess, by the way that he is plucking at the strings. I think this image addresses social issues, because even though this photo shows Kurt's strengths at being an excellent musician it also could be that he feels most alive when he is around his guitar or writing songs. He's in his comfort zone. The subject matter looks realistic to me in the way that it has been shot, however there is an element of that it has been cropped so that only part of the original image has be selected. In some way this photograph relates to my theme of 'Inside, Outside & Inbetween' in the way that you can only see the exterior of what he is doing and you can't his face, meaning that his face could express a lot of emotion of sadness, concentration or happiness. You don't what he is thinking either giving you the impression that its a mystery to what he his feeling inside. Yes the photograph was framed around the photo giving it a more appealing look making you draw more attention to inside the frame.  The overall arrangement of the image is really inspiring, for many reasons. One because of the fact that it has been taken is black and white s you get more contrast going on in the picture, and are not distracted by lots of colours. Two because of the how close you feel to the musician and even Tellers photograph skills, when I look at this image, I feel that I have replaced Teller and taken the picture myself because of how close and personal the shot is. Its hard to tell if this picture is canned or planned, in some respect it is a bit of both, because Teller could of sneakily take a quick picture of Cobain playing on the guitar or he could of asked Kurt to pose. You don't really know. The techniques that Teller has used is a good use of depth of field and lighting together create a crisp image. He has also seemed to have used crop the image slightly so only part of the original picture is being displayed and and good use of contrast skills. The photograph captures the mood of emotions. I find that these types of photos, where you can see the models face at all, gives them a sense of mystery. Also this style of work, having a musician focusing on his instrument, can clearly been seen in many album artworks or posters of bands or artist to represent their dedication to what they love the most. Music. In my opinion I love this style of photography, Because it is very simplistic but work well within black and white. Again only focusing on only an element of the big picture, because you can see that all the photographer was to express is what he believe is the most captivating part of the photograph.

Man Ray Exhibition

This photograph is by Man Ray and is called Le Baiser (The Kiss) 1929. The subject matter of this photo is presented in the name of the image. The composition of the image shows two women's faces pressed closely together with the noses and lips almost touching. The meaning of this image that Ray is trying to express is the closeness of something can be, and how beautiful a part of the body can be. Even though most people would expect to see male and female lips close together, there is some quite special about having the people of the same sex that close together. This is because you can see the definition of both females lips are really dominate and striking to look at. This image address many issues in my opinion. One being social, because of how people may reacted to seeing this image. People think its wrong to have two people of the same sex being that close to one another, even if it just is for a photo. Another life issues is cultural, only because in some cultures people think that you should be with someone from the opposite sex. In my opinion I love this work because it is really artists and captures a really unique image. In many ways this image by Ray relates to the theme because of the shadow inbetween the top lips creates a nice part of the image giving it another dimension to look at. Yes, the picture was framed with only a small border giving the photograph more definition and presents. I love the arrangement of this print because it catches your attention straight away and just focuses on the lips and nose are of both models and it works better in black and white. Even though it would look nice in colour, with having bright lipstick on the models, with it being in a negative colour you can still get the definition of it. The photograph has been planned because if the image was canned, Ray wouldn't of got the same effect as if it was planned. The techniques that I believe that Man Ray has used have been to get a good depth of field around the lip area and of course the best possible lighting to get more shadows into the image. The kiss created the mood of passion and sense of love. I think this types of photo would work well as a film cover or trying to express a poem. In my opinion I like this picture quite alot because of the amount of focus is on that section of the image. I definitely believe that it has been cropped to get this so be the main centre of attention, and it works really well. I really like the concept of having the whole of the page filled up with the photo because you a automatically drawn to the lips, then you begin to explore the rest of the shadows and the noses.

Kurt Cobain and The Kiss differ in they way that they have been presented. The Kiss has just focused on the nose and most importantly the lips, where as Kurt Cobain, the picture has been got alot more happening it. The contrast in both of Tellers and Rays work are very different Tellers photograph has more contrast between the different textures happening in the photo. However Rays contrast is very subtle but you can still define the darkness of the lips. There is a massive age gap between Man Rays images to Jurgen Tellers. Rays artwork is very grainy compared to Tellers which are more crisp. The impacted has changed dramatically between Rays and Tellers years. This makes you wonder what if the pieces of work switched ears, would you still get the same effect on the opposite photograph? I really love both of this photographers because they display a main focal area that first attracted me to them whilst looking in the galleries, but if I had to chose one that I liked the most it would Jurgen Tellers. This is only because the image is better quality and I feel more atrrated to the Kurt Cobain then The Kiss.

What is OCD?

Obsessive–compulsive disorder (OCD) is an anxiety disorder characterised by intrusive thoughts that produce uneasiness, apprehension, fear, or worry. People show this by repetitive behaviours aimed at reducing the associated anxiety; or by a combination of such obsessions and compulsions. The main characteristics that you most people are familiar with are turning a light switch for a certain amount of time before they feel comfortable. Or even washing the hands thoroughly, until they are happy and relax. Other symptoms that you may see is stacking shelves in a certain way e.g. alphabetically or size order. OCD is very common but you would probably not recognise someone walking down the street who needs to lock every door in their house 3 times before leaving.

First Prints

Here are my prints from my first black and white film for this exam project. There is a range of different photographs relating to the theme of Inside, Outside & InBetween, they are Animals, OCD and Reflection.

These first selection of photos are of a drawings of a farm animals, Cow, Lamb and a Pig. I wanted to try and create something that involves what is actually inside the animals body. As you can see I used a strip of bacon for the pig, a piece of steak for the cow and liver for the lamb. With the different parts of the animals with contrast with the drawings, making them slightly more life like. I placed the meat/organs on top of cling film which I laid on top of the drawing. The only light I used was the kitchen, making the piece of paper seem more bright and part of the image light up. I took these photographs from a quite a height so that I could get al of the image in. I got the image in focus, then had the aperture on about 8 and had the shutter speed between 1/250s and 1/60s. I again adjusted the focus again so know for sure that picture below was crisp. Once developing the film and printed the image, you can see where the kitchen light as almost has hidden apart of the image or made the even lighter.

My next idea was to take pictures of peoples hands. This expresses OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder) meaning which some people need to turn the light switch on and off a certain amount of times, washing their hands thoroughly and locking/opening the front door multiple times. I decided to take photographs of this because I feel like it shows what people are thinking or need to do a certain amount of times, but you may not think they do these things when you look at them. With all of this photos I got really up close so that only the hand was in focus and everything around it was blurred or out of focus. This shows good depth of field. For the lighting I used natural light only. However I feel if I were to change anything about these collection of photographs, it would be to shot them again but with a poised table lamp. This is where I can change the position of the light and giving different shadows in the photos.

Here is my final photograph that I took. This shows an image of myself taking a picture in a mirror. This relates to the theme of inside, outside and in between, because the reflection of myself shows what its between me, the camera and the mirror. Even though this was a last minute idea to take a portrait of myself, it still links within the theme. If I had more time to come up with a more detail approach to taking a self portrait, meaning having different lighting set up, or even making a double exposure in the camera having two self portraits but with me moving slight over to the right to get a more experimental feel.

5 Senses Photo

Here is a photomontage of all the five sense. I took pictures of my eyes, ear, nose, lips and hand. I thought I wanted to do something different with images that I took. Instead of just digitally enhancing them, I decided to make a collage of them, it unusual places to make it look more contemporary. I like the black background because it really shows off the body parts well. I have been inspired by Linder Sterling collages

Linder Sterling

Linder Sterling is a photographer that uses collage in her photos, meaning which she uses different objects within her original to create a new abstract image. In this picture you can see that the model in the background is the main focal point that first captures you to the arrangement. I like the fact that the woman is in black and white, as it looks simple but you still get a magical effect from it.  As I have looked closer to the image I can see that the lace on her shoulders looks more realistic than it would be just in a photo. I do believe that the lace has been placed onto the woman's body to give the image more texture. As you begin to look else where on the photograph you see that there is a spoon and folk on the models eyes. I feel this adds quirkiness to the image. Even though the cutlery is covering the woman's eyes you can still see how powerful they are through them, they still look very piercing. As you begin to look down the image you notice some plump red lips that don't seem to belong to the model. I feel that Sterling wanted to add a splash of colour into collage, and by added the power of the red lips, adds a lot more contrast to the image. All in all the placement of each part of the collage works really well within its own element. I really like Linders' style because of how random things can be put together to create a complete new picture within which every part of works so well together. I really have been inspired by this sort of art work because it can express lot of emotions and feelings towards something. And by having a model as the main source of influence to bring in different object that can either relate to them or not it a really unique idea that can portray many different things.

Analysis - The 5 Senses

Carston Witte is one photographer that I have been really drawn too, this photo is a reason why!! I really like how the model is wearing hardly any make-up, so by adding the skull design on top of her face works more naturally and look are stunning. I also like how the photo has been taken black and white as I feel it gives the model a more define look and stands out. Witte technical skills are really simple but his final outcome is very impressive and instantly grabs your attention. I would like to experiment with this sort of photograph because you could either use double exposures to get this same effect. Or even paint on the skull carefully. I love this photographers work.

Adam Fuss is a strange photographer in my opinion because of what he takes pictures of. At a first glance you can see two rabbit silhouettes and what looks like bits of food or leaves. As you look closer you can see that the image is a photogram of rabbits with the insides placed around them. I find this image very hard to look at, but in some respect that the quality of the picture is really good because you can definitely identify what is in the photo.

Sarah Illenberger is the final photographer that I have looked into for the five senses. I love this photo because you can see it is an apple but you soon realise that the apple is covered in hair. I think this is a amazing idea of trying to portray the sense. This is because normally when you see an apple you would want to eat it, but seeing it with hair wrapped around it, you instincts is to turn it away. Sarah's creations of different foods covered or turned into something is really imaginative. I like this concept alot.

David Bailey

Jack Nicholson

David Bailey CBE is a one of the best British photographers. He has taken some of the most famous photos of different celebrities and the one above is one of them. This picture is of actor Jack Nicholson who is most famous for being in films The Shining and The Departed. I like this image as I feel that it shows a lot of expression, which can convey many meanings. When I first look at this image, I automatically see anger because of the way that he's face looks sort of distorted and disgruntled. I also get the impression that he is upset, as his eyes seem to be squashed together more closely, looking like he is about to burst into tears. Another reason why I like this photo is because of the lighting Bailey has used to light up one half of Nicholson's face and not the other. This gives clear indication on how well black and white photograph work well more than colour in my opinion. I feel that the contrast between the darker part and the lighter part of the image work really well together, this is because of the amount of detail shown throughout the picture. Even though you can see more detail within the lighter part of the shot, you can still distinguish a lot of detail in the darker half of the image. Of course the main focus of this photo is of course Nicholson's facial expression, but within that you can also see a lot of definition within the face. The lines on his forehead are very prodominate in detail and makes the image come to life, and making it more than just a picture. When I look at this image I automatically feel the pain that he his expressing in his face, and with the lighting as well, it makes you more drawn into an image. Whereas if this image was taken with rubbish lighting or not had been taken in focus, I wouldn't be taken in as much as I am now. I defiantly feel that the light and the model expressions are really inspiring to captivate in creating them in a different way.
